Good luck on them 20 somethings

Updated: Aug 23, 2019

“I think your 20s are the hardest part of life. I mean, everyone goes on about how hard it is to be a teenager, but actually I think it’s tougher to be in your 20s because you’re expected to be a grownup and expected to earn your own living and be successful and I think you feel like a kid still.”

- Nigel Col

Hey friends, for me the 20s are the most awkward years in life. I believe your 20s really form you to be you. When I was younger I would always say “man I can’t wait to turn 16” I turned 16 then I was like “nah, being 16 ain’t it, I’m ready to turn 18” got to 18 said the same thing and wish to turn 20 and when I turned 20 I wanted to be 16 all over again. I used to think your 20s would be your prime years, that was a lie. Even though I’m only 21 I’ve been around people the age of 20-29 and so much is just going on. Like the quote said “in your 20s you’re expected to be a grownup and expected to earn your own living and be successful and I think you feel like a kid still” I agree 100%. I have friends who are in their 20s who became parents, I got friends that are married, I have friends who are independent and on their own and I also have friends that are still depending on their parents. Growing up society made me think that your 20s would be cake, boy was that a slap in the face. I ran some questions on my Instagram story which I will discuss on my podcast but one question I asked was “how would you describe your 20s”? Majority of the answers fell into the same category as “complicated”. I can only speak for me and what I’ve seen around me but the 20s are challenging. We’re getting out of the mindset of a child and becoming young adults. We’re lost, struggling, fighting mental illnesses, learning to be independent but even with the whole thing of being independent I think our patents/guardians play a major part. Some don’t want us growing up and being independent. I know a 25 year old that can’t do stuff a 20 year old can do because their parent isn’t allowing them to grow into their 20s. SZA song “20 something” describes the 20s perfectly to me. She says “How could it be? 20 something All alone still, not a thing in my name”. To me this basically says in your 20s these are the years for you to get married, buy a house, car etc. so she questions how can she be 20 something all alone (no lover) not a thing in my name (nothing is truly hers) she also says “Hopin' my 20 somethings won't end Hopin' to keep the rest of my friends Prayin' the 20 somethings don't kill me, don't kill me” Your 20 somethings are, in a way, your last chance to be young and free. You’re still youthful, but without the restrictions that come with being an adolescent. You’re older, but without some of the heavier responsibilities that come with being a full-fledged adult. After (and during) their mid-twenties is the time that people start settling down, getting married, and having kids, so it can feel like your friends are disappearing and moving on to live their own lives. lastly, in her chorus she says “Stuck in them 20 somethings, good luck on them 20 somethings, but God bless these 20 somethings” you honestly do feel stuck in your 20s because you are expected to do so much so fast. We’re in school, working, trying to have a social life, trying to still find ourselves and our purpose and just living life. It sounds so easy but it’s really not. I wish you guys luck on your 20 somethings journey because it’s not going to be easy and it’s going to be hard but I know that we got this. God bless your 20 somethings. Until next time friends.
